How to Delete a User Account on Windows Without Losing Files
Copy what you need before deleting, since there is no automatic merge.
You want to remove a user account from the machine, but keep its files — it's possible, with one important step before deleting.
First of all: Windows offers the option "Delete account and data" — avoid that option if you want to keep the files. Instead, manually copy whatever you need from that account before deleting it.
Steps
- Sign in with an administrator account different from the one you're going to delete.
- Go to
C:\Users\AccountNameand copy whatever you need (Documents, Desktop, Pictures) to a location outside that folder — for example, your own account or an external drive. - Settings → Accounts → "Family & other users" → select the account → "Delete".
Windows doesn't offer a direct way to automatically "merge" the deleted account's files with another one — step 2 (copying them yourself before deleting) is the only reliable way to keep them.
