Terms like "cloud", "byte" or "driver" are constantly taken for granted, but nobody is born knowing them. Here are the most common ones, each explained in one clear sentence, assuming nothing.

Note: this glossary includes both general terms and some specific to Windows, so you do not have to look in two different places.

Basic concepts

Byte, kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte

Units for measuring the size of files and storage. Each is roughly 1,000 times the previous one: a megabyte (MB) is about 1,000 kilobytes, a gigabyte (GB) about 1,000 megabytes.

The cloud

Storing something "in the cloud" means it lives on an internet server instead of your own device, so you can access it from anywhere with a connection.

Browser

The program you use to visit web pages: Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari are the best known.

URL

The address of a web page, like solucionapc.com. It stands for "uniform resource locator".

Kernel

The deepest program of an operating system: it mediates between the computer's hardware (processor, memory, disk) and every other program. In Windows it rarely gets mentioned because it is invisible to the user, but in Linux it comes up often because different distributions share the same kernel and only change what is built on top.

Hardware and connections

Driver

A program that lets Windows or Linux communicate correctly with a specific piece of hardware, such as the graphics card or the printer.

USB

The most common type of port and connector for external devices: mice, keyboards, drives, USB sticks.

Wi-Fi

The technology that connects you to the internet without cables, via radio waves to a router.

Bluetooth

A technology for connecting nearby devices without cables, such as headphones or a mouse, with shorter range than Wi-Fi.

Windows-specific terms

BIOS (or UEFI)

The computer's most basic program, which starts even before Windows and controls the boot process. You enter it by pressing a specific key (Del, F2 or similar depending on the manufacturer) right after switching on, before the Windows logo appears.

Windows Registry

An internal database where Windows stores its own configuration and that of installed programs. Not to be edited by hand unless a specific guide walks you through it step by step.

Partition

A way of dividing a single disk into several separate sections, as if they were different disks even though physically there is only one.

Software and security

Software

Any program or application running on your device, as opposed to hardware (the physical parts).

Malware

The umbrella term for any malicious program: viruses, spyware, ransomware and the like.

Firewall

A system controlling which connections enter and leave your device, blocking those that could be dangerous.

Backup

An extra copy of your important files, stored somewhere else, in case the original is lost or damaged.

Common mistakes

Confusing "the internet" with "the browser" is very common among beginners: the internet is the global network, and the browser is just the program you use to view it. Closing the browser does not disconnect you from the internet.

What is the difference between hardware and software?

Hardware is the computer's physical parts (processor, RAM, disk...), while software is the programs running on that hardware, including the operating system itself.

What is the difference between Wi-Fi and the internet?

Wi-Fi is just the cable-free way to connect to your router; the internet is the global network that router gives you access to. You can have working Wi-Fi without internet, if the router has no connection.

Do I need to know all these terms to use a computer?

No, not for basic everyday use. Knowing them helps mainly when you want to understand technical guides better or when someone is trying to help you fix a problem.
