How to Back Up an Android Phone
Google's automatic backup covers most of it — but not always your text messages, and it can fail silently if your Drive is full. Here is what it includes, what it skips, and how to verify before switching phones.
Automatic backup with Google
- Settings → System (or "Google") → "Backup".
- Turn backup on — it covers photos, contacts, installed apps, and system settings.
What gets backed up automatically: contacts (via syncing), photos (via Google Photos if enabled), settings and data from compatible apps, and the list of installed apps (so you can easily reinstall them on a new phone).
What is NOT always backed up automatically
- Text messages (some manufacturers include them, others require a dedicated SMS backup app).
- Data from specific apps that do not use Android's standard backup system.
Tip: before an important phone switch, verify manually what has actually been backed up: go to Settings → Backup and check the date of the last backup and exactly what it includes.
Warning: make sure you have enough space in your Google account (the backup uses your Google Drive quota) — if it is full, the backup can fail silently and you will not find out until you need it.
