Windows Editions: Differences Between Home, Pro and Enterprise
Understand the real differences between Home, Pro and Enterprise before buying or upgrading your machine.
Windows is not a single thing — it is sold in different "editions", with the same base system but different features switched on.
| Feature | Home | Pro | Enterprise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intended use | Home | Professional, self-employed | Large businesses |
| BitLocker | No (only basic device encryption) | Yes, full | Yes |
| Receiving Remote Desktop connections | No | Yes | Yes |
| Joining a domain (Active Directory) | No | Yes | Yes |
| Hyper-V (virtualisation) | No | Yes | Yes |
| Bought individually | Yes | Yes | No, only via corporate volume licensing |
Which one do you need?
Home covers normal home use perfectly — browsing, office work, gaming, streaming. Pro makes sense if you need some specific feature from the table above: full encryption with BitLocker, receiving remote connections, or virtualisation with Hyper-V. Enterprise is not bought individually — it is exclusive to volume licensing for large businesses, with centralised management.
Tip: if you are not sure whether you need Pro, you probably will be fine with Home — Pro's exclusive features are fairly specific and technical. It is only worth paying the difference if you know for certain you will use one of them.
Can I switch editions later?
Yes, there is a direct upgrade from Home to Pro from Settings → System → Activation, with no need to reinstall Windows from scratch — you only need the product key corresponding to Pro.
Frequently asked questions
Is Windows Home slower than Pro?
No, the base performance is identical — the difference lies only in which additional features are switched on, not in the system's speed.
Can I buy Windows Enterprise for my personal PC?
No, Enterprise is only distributed through volume licensing for organisations — it is not available as an individual purchase for consumers.
Is it worth paying more for Pro if I'm not a professional?
Generally not, unless you specifically need one of its exclusive features (full BitLocker, receiving remote connections, Hyper-V) — for normal home use, Home is enough.
