The relationship between resolution and size
Resolution alone says nothing without the panel size — 1080p on a 24" monitor looks sharp; the same 1080p on a 32" one looks noticeably pixelated, because the same pixels are spread over a larger surface.
For gaming: resolution vs FPS
Higher resolution is more demanding for your graphics card to maintain high FPS. If you prioritise maximum FPS above all (competitive shooters), 1080p is still reasonable even today. If you prioritise the visual experience, 1440p is currently the most balanced sweet spot.
Tip: it doesn't make sense to buy a 4K monitor if your graphics card can't drive it smoothly in what you play — check first whether your machine handles that resolution before investing in the monitor.
