How to Install or Upgrade Your PC's RAM
Step-by-step guide to installing or upgrading your PC's RAM without damaging any component.
Before buying
- Check how many slots your motherboard has and how many are free.
- Confirm the compatible type (DDR4 or DDR5 — they are not interchangeable) and the maximum speed your board supports.
- If adding to existing modules, choose the same capacity and speed to keep Dual Channel working correctly.
Physical installation
- Turn off the machine, unplug it from power, touch an unpainted metal part of the case to discharge static electricity.
- Open the side latches of the slot.
- Align the module's notch with the slot (it only fits one way).
- Press firmly until you hear both latches click shut on their own.
Warning: do not force the module if it doesn't fit easily — check that the orientation (the notch) is correct before pressing harder.
Confirm it works
Turn on and enter the BIOS, or use Windows + Pause to
confirm the detected total RAM matches what you installed. If it

Do the new modules need to be identical to the ones I already have?
To keep Dual Channel working correctly, yes, it is advisable that they match in capacity and speed — different modules can work, but without the benefit of Dual Channel.
