How to Install a New Printer on Windows
Over USB or network, with automatic detection in most cases.
- Connect the printer (USB) or turn it on if it's Wi-Fi, on the same network as your PC.
- Settings → Bluetooth & devices → "Printers & scanners" → "Add device".
- Windows detects it automatically in most cases — select it and follow the instructions.
If it doesn't show up automatically, "Add manually" lets you search for it by name, IP address (if it's a network printer), or install from a manufacturer disc if you have one.
Tip: although Windows usually installs a functional generic driver, to make the most of your model's specific features (print quality, advanced scanning), installing the manufacturer's official software is usually the better option.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need the manufacturer's CD/installer to install the printer?
Not always — Windows automatically detects and installs most modern printers with a functional generic driver. The manufacturer's software adds additional specific features.
What do I do if Windows doesn't detect my printer automatically?
Use 'Add manually' from the same screen, which lets you search for it by name or IP address if it's a network printer.
