How to Change the Desktop Environment on Linux
Between GNOME, KDE and others, with no need to uninstall any of them.
If you already know the differences between GNOME, KDE and others, switching from one to another is simpler than it seems.
- Install the environment you want to try, for example:
sudo apt install kde-plasma-desktop. - Log out (no need to restart the entire machine).
- On the login screen, look for a gear icon or dropdown menu next to the login button — that's where you choose the desktop environment for that session.
You can have several environments installed at once and switch between them each time you log in — you don't need to uninstall one to try another.
Tip: if a new environment gives you problems, you can go back to the previous one straight away from that same selection screen — the switch is completely reversible, session by session.
