The terms you actually need to know to move around Windows comfortably, without getting into developer jargon that almost no one uses day to day.
Interface and navigation
- Desktop: the main screen where you see icons and the wallpaper.
- Taskbar: the bottom strip with the Start menu, open programs and the clock.
- File Explorer: the program for browsing your folders and files.
- Settings: where you adjust almost everything in the system (largely replaces the old "Control Panel").
System and maintenance
- Operating system: the base program that makes the whole computer work.
- Driver: software that lets Windows communicate with a specific piece of hardware.
- Update: improvement or fix that Microsoft sends out periodically.
- Registry: the system's internal configuration database.
Basic hardware
- RAM: the computer's short-term working memory.
- SSD/HDD: the two main types of storage disk.
- Processor (CPU): the component that runs the computer's calculations.
Security
- Malware: software designed to damage or exploit your machine.
- Antivirus: software that detects and removes malware.
- Firewall: a filter that controls which network connections enter and leave your machine.
