What Is Windows Virtual Memory and How to Adjust It

Windows mentions "virtual memory" on several settings screens, and it sounds more complicated than it really is.

Simple explanation

If you already know our explanation of RAM (the desk where the computer keeps what it's using at any given moment), virtual memory is an emergency space: when the "desk" (RAM) fills up completely, Windows uses part of the disk as a temporary auxiliary desk. It's much slower than real RAM, but it stops the system from completely locking up when it runs out of available physical memory.

Technically, this is saved in a file called pagefile.sys, on your main disk — normally invisible, and you shouldn't touch it directly.

Do you need to adjust it yourself?

In the vast majority of cases, no. Windows manages it automatically, adjusting the size to whatever you need at any given moment. It only makes sense to touch it manually if you keep seeing insufficient memory warnings after trying the usual solutions — we cover that in what to do when Windows says there isn't enough memory.

How to check the current setting

  1. Search for "Advanced system settings".
  2. "Advanced" tab → "Performance" → "Settings".
  3. "Advanced" tab → "Virtual memory" → "Change".

There you'll see whether it's set to "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" (recommended for most people) or configured manually.

Tip: if you decide to adjust it manually, a reasonable reference is an initial size of 1.5 times your physical RAM, and a maximum of 3 times that amount — there's no need to be more precise than that for normal home use.

Warning: turning off virtual memory entirely (setting it to 0) doesn't free up RAM or improve performance — it just means Windows loses that backup when physical RAM runs out, increasing the risk of programs suddenly closing or the system becoming unstable.

The real solution if this happens often

If you need to adjust virtual memory frequently because it keeps falling short, that's a fairly clear sign the real solution is more physical RAM, not continuing to increase the paging file size — virtual memory will always be much slower than real RAM, no matter how fast your disk is.
