How to Install Fedora Linux Step by Step
With Fedora Media Writer and the Anaconda installer, including an honest take on disk encryption.
Before anything else: if you're installing alongside Windows, make a backup of your important files first.
Step 1: create the installation USB
- Download Fedora Media Writer, the official tool from the Fedora project (available for Windows, Mac and Linux).
- Connect a USB drive of at least 4 GB (its content will be erased).
- Open Fedora Media Writer → choose "Fedora Workstation" → select your USB drive → write.
Step 2: boot from the USB drive
Restart the machine, press your manufacturer's quick-boot key (F12, Esc...) and choose the USB drive. You'll see the welcome screen with the "Install Fedora Linux" option.
Step 3: the Anaconda installer (only 4 real steps)
- Language and keyboard layout.
- Installation destination — the step that deserves the most attention: choose the disk, and whether you want automatic partitioning (simpler) or manual (more control).
- Review and confirm the changes about to be applied.
- Create your user account and password.
About disk encryption: the installer will offer to encrypt the entire disk. For a normal home PC, it isn't strictly necessary — it adds an extra password on boot and complicates data recovery if the disk fails, in exchange for protecting your data if the physical machine gets stolen. Only turn it on if that specific scenario genuinely worries you.
