How to Change the Default Sound Device on Windows
Between speakers, headphones and other audio outputs.
If you have several audio devices (speakers, headphones, a monitor with built-in speakers), Windows needs to know which one to use by default.
- Click the volume icon in the taskbar.
- Next to the volume bar, click the arrow or the current device's name.
- Select the device you want to use by default from the list.
You can also manage this from Settings → System → Sound → "Output", with more options and detail about each connected device.
Tip: if the sound disappears right after unplugging headphones, check this screen first — Windows sometimes doesn't automatically go back to the previous device.
Frequently asked questions
Can I have a different sound device for each app?
Yes, under Settings → Sound → 'Volume mixer' you can assign a different audio output to each program individually.
Why doesn't Windows remember my preferred device?
It sometimes prioritises the most recently connected device over the one you had selected before — it's worth checking and re-selecting manually after connecting or disconnecting audio peripherals.
